Service of Nine Lessons and Carols

The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols was held amongst a large gathering at the Keble Memorial Hall on 1st December, 2013.  The message was delivered by Revd. Fr. Jameson Gnanaponrajah, Principal of St. John’s College Jaffna.

Teachers Day Programme

The Annual Teachers Day programme of S.Thomas' College, Bandarawela was held at the Keble Hall on the 7th of October 2013 to commemorate World Teachers' Day - October 6th.

The Prefects Guild and the Buddhist Society of the College were the main organisers of this event. One of the highlights of this event was that students also took the opportunity to show their gratitude to past teachers who had left the college. One of the invitees and special guest was Mrs. Thanthirige who recollected her past memories of the college.

Students also used this  opportunity to entertain those  present with both songs and a drama. A token of appreciation was presented to all the teachers  for their untiring efforts.

 


 

 

Challenging 5 Programme

The Annual Challenging 5 Programme of S.Thomas' College, Bandarawela was held on the  22nd of October 2013 of the Keble Memorial Hall. This programme was conducted so as to appreciate the students who had done well at the Gade 5 scholarship.

This year, 25 students qualified from both the Sinhala and Tamil mediums.  A further 34 students who also scored above 130 marks obtained a silver medal.  Students who scored above 70 marks were also felicitated. The highest marks were obtained by V. Prageeth (181 marks) and M. Dhanishkar (181 marks) from the Tamil Medium and by U. Dissanayake (180 marks) from the Sinhala Medium.

A token of appreciation was also awarded by the Acting Headmaster of the College, Ven. S.P. Nesakumar to all the students who sat for the Grade 5 scholarship exam as they had done their best. Speaking at the ceremony, Ven. S.P. Nesakumar commended the teachers and parents alike for guiding the children on the right track. 

 

 


Mobitel/Observer School Cricket Team of the Year - “Uva”

Mobitel/Observer School Cricket Team of the Year - “Uva”Mobitel/Observer School Cricket Team of the Year - “Uva” 

S.Thomas' College, Bandarawela emerged as the winner of “The Mobitel/ Observer School Cricket Team of the Year 2013” in the Uva Province for their outstanding performance during the period 2012/13.

The trophy was awarded recently at Hotel Galadari where a large number of dignitaries were present. During the period under review, the team was captained by Manoj Prabath and coached by Mr. Ananda Wijenayake.

Speaking during a function held at the college, the present Acting Headmaster, Ven, S.P. Nesakumar applauded the efforts of the team including the coach and M.I.C. Mr. Denzil Darling and encouraged the students to take part in sports.

 


English Day

The English Day was held on the 28th September 2013 at the Keble Memorial Hall.  The chief guest was Mrs. Ruwanthie de Chickera, playwright, screenwriter and theatre director. In her address, Mrs. de Chikera mentioned the dangers of the "world of screens" and reiterated the importance of reading.

S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela bids farewell to Headmaster L.A.M. Chandrasekera

Amidst a large gathering of staff and students, the College bade farewell to Mr. L.A.M. Chandrasekera, former Headmaster of S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela and Mrs. Chandrasekera on September 13, 2013.

After serving as the Headmaster for thirteen years, Mr. Chandrasekera spoke about his tenure and wished everyone goodbye at the farewell event. Ven. S.P. Nesakumar, Archdeacon of Nuwara Eliya and Acting Headmaster applauded Mr. Chandrasekera for the dedicated services rendered by him to the school.

A photograph of Mr. Chandrasekera was also unveiled during this event and now adorns the walls of the Keble Memorial Hall along with the past Headmasters of the school.

 


Annual Prize Giving

 

The Annual Prize Giving was held on Tuesday, 23rd July 2013 at the Keble Memorial Hall.  The Chief Guests were Rt. Rev. D.R. Canagasabey, Bishop of Colombo / Chairman Board of Governors, S. Thomas’ Colleges and Madam Harshini Canagasabey.

Under 20 Rugby: Lt. Col. Chandra Jayaweera Challenge Trophy

 

 

S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela beat Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Bandarawela by 68 points to 12 on July 5th, 2013 at the the Polo Grounds, Diyatalawa and was awarded the Lt. Col. Chandra Jayaweera Challenge Trophy.

 


 

Bakthi Gee Programme

 

The Bakthi Gee Programme was held on Friday 21st June 2013 at the Bandarawela Town Hall.  The students and staff participated at this programme.

 


Meelad-Un-Nabi Celebration 2013

 

The Meelad-Un-Nabi Celebration was held on Saturday 1st June 2013 at the Keble Memorial Hall.  The Chief Guests were Mr. Faizal Salieh Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer, Amana Bank Ltd and Mrs. Salieh.

 


 

Vesak Lantern Competition

 

 
The Vesak Lantern Competition was held on Friday 31st May 2013 at the college grounds.  The Venerable Kahattewela Siri Niwasa Thero was the Chief Guest. On the same day, the School Bank Unit in collaboration with the Bank of Ceylon was also launched.   Mr. G. H. Chandrasiri, AGM (Uva Province), Bank of Ceylon was the Chief Guest.

 


 

Under 17 Cricket Team Tours Jaffna

 

The S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela under 17 Cricket team visited Jaffna and played two matches with St. John's College, Jaffna and Nurffield School, Jaffna. S. Thomas' Bandarawela lost with St. Johns in 40 Over's match on 27/4/2013 and won with Nurfield in 30 Over's Match on 28/4/2013.

 


Primary School Sports Meet

 

The Primary School Sports Meet was held on Saturday the 16th of March 2013 at 10.00 am on the College Grounds.  The Chief Guest was Ms. Sharmila Gunatilleke, Principal, Bishop's College, Colombo. 

In her speech, Ms Gunatilleke mentioned that parents too, play an important role in the formation of the child – parents often always want their child to win, at all costs. This, she said, was an unhealthy attitude and one that should not be inculcated in young children. Uva Thomian Cricket Encounter

 

 

The Annual Uva Thomian Cricket Encounter was held on the 2nd of March 2013 at the Bandarawela Esplanade. The Chief Guest was former Sri Lankan Cricketer Mr. Aruna Gunawardane, while the Guest of Honour was the Mayor of Bandarawela Hon. Chaminda Wijesiri. More>>

 


 

Vehicle Rally

 

The Vehicle Rally was held on the 24th of February 2013.  This event was organised by the Old Boys Association of the S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela and Gurutalawa in order to publicise the Uva Thomian Cricket Encounter that was to be held on the 2nd of March.

 


 

Annual Inter-house Sports Meet 2013

 

The inter-house sports meet was held at the college on February 15th, 2013.  The chief guest for the occasion was Air Commodore M.D.A.P. Payoe, RSP, USP, psc, Chief Instructor Air Wing, The Defence Services Command and Staff College, Batalanda.

 


 

 

Cross Country Race

 

The cross country race commenced at the entrance of S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela on the 1st of February, 2013. Mr. S.K. Karunasena, HQI of the Bandarawela Police was the chief guest.  One hundred and sixty students participated in this race. 

Anandan Dilshan from De Saram House was placed first. He was followed by Thavayogan Sarwanarajah (Hulugalla House) and D Sundaramurthi (Hayman House).

 


71st Founder's Day Celebration 2013

 

A thanksgiving service was offered by Rev. Fr. Christopher Balraj, Dean - Theological College of Lanka to commemorate the Founder's Day. A tree planting ceremony was also held on the same day.
